This is a community sourced list of features from Irish mobile phone networks. Updated November 2025. Don't enter a contract based on this page, read the terms yourself.

Calls and SMS over Wifi are especially useful in areas of poor mobile reception, because your phone can place calls and send texts over your broadband connection instead of relying on a weak mobile signal. Many new-build houses have excellent modern insulation which make it harder for a mobile signal to reach the inside rooms.

Who supports Wifi calling?

Wifi calling can make calls clearer and more reliable, particularly indoors.

Networks with Wifi calling

These networks offer Wifi calling:

  • Eir
  • Three
  • Vodafone
  • Clear Mobile
  • GoMo
  • Sky Mobile

Networks without Wifi calling

These networks currently do not provide VoLTE or Wifi calling (voice and SMS stay on traditional mobile networks only):

  • Lyca Mobile
  • Virgin Media
  • Tesco Mobile
  • 48
  • An Post Mobile

Who supports VoLTE

VoLTE (voice over LTE/4G) can make calls clearer.

Networks with VoLTE

These networks offer 4G calling (VoLTE):

  • Eir
  • Three
  • Vodafone
  • Clear Mobile
  • GoMo
  • Sky Mobile

Networks without VoLTE

These networks currently do not provide VoLTE:

  • Lyca Mobile
  • Virgin Media
  • Tesco Mobile
  • 48
  • An Post Mobile

SMS over Wifi

Some operators support not just calls over Wifi, but also SMS. This means texts can send and receive over Wifi even if you have no mobile signal.

Networks that support SMS over Wifi

These networks support both calling and SMS over Wifi:

  • Three
  • Eir
  • GoMo
  • Sky Mobile

Voice over Wifi only (no SMS)

The following operators support Wifi calling for voice calls, but do not support SMS over Wifi:

  • Clear Mobile
  • Vodafone

WiFi calling when abroad

Behaviour for Wifi calling outside Ireland is not the same on every network. This can affect whether calls and SMS over WiFi work on international WiFi networks.

GoMo

GoMo allows Wifi calling when you are abroad. SMS over Wifi is also supported while roaming, where your device supports it.

Vodafone

Vodafone does not enable Wifi calling outside Ireland.

Eir

Eir allows Wifi calling when you are abroad. SMS over Wifi is also supported while roaming, where your device supports it.

Three

Three does not enable Wifi calling outside Ireland.

Sky Mobile

Sky Mobile does not enable Wifi calling outside Ireland (but there are unconfirmed reports of it working in the UK)

Always check your networks latest roaming policy and price list. Some networks may treat Wifi calling abroad as roaming usage.

5G availability and data speeds

5G access and speed limits differ by network and by plan (especially if you're on a cheaper offer)

Clear Mobile

5G is available on all Clear Mobile plans. Data speed limits that previously applied have been removed in 2025.

GoMo

GoMo offers:

  • 4G on the €9.99 plan
  • 5G on the €14.99 plan
  • 5G on the €12.99 Black Friday plan

Three

Three offers 5G on prepay plans. See the list of 5g enabled plans here

Vodafone

Vodafone also provides 5G some prepaid plans.

An Post Mobile

An Post Mobile has NO 5G on any plans.

Virgin Media

Virgin Media has NO 5G on any plans.

Why Wifi calling and SMS over Wifi matter

In many Irish homes and workplaces, mobile signal can be weak indoors, especially in rural areas or buildings with thick walls or modern foil insulation. If your operator supports Wifi calling and SMS over Wifi, your phone can switch to using your broadband connection instead.
